August 18, 2020 – According to the Illinois State Board of Education, more than 500 districts plan on offering some form of in-class learning for the fall semester. Some teachers have reportedly retired in order to avoid going back into classrooms while the pandemic is ongoing. A surge of retiring teachers could negatively affect their retirement programs. Illinois is currently dealing with a shortage of teachers as well, which compounds the issue. Currently, Illinois has the 8th highest decrease in students who are majoring in education in college.
