August 24, 2020 – According to State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, one in four Illinois residents has unclaimed funds that are due to them that are currently in a bank in Springfield.  Frerichs says there are a variety of sources that the money comes from and that he and his staff have made the process of claiming the money more efficient and that they want people to claim as much as possible.  Currently, there is over $3 billion in funding and unclaimed property.

One in four people in Illinois is eligible to claim some forgotten money or property, Frerichs said.  “When I came into office, I heard too many people complaining about how hard it was to claim this stuff,” he said.

Frerichs said that the average person who makes a claim receives $1,000.  The money could be from a rebate check that was accidentally disposed of, a forgotten bank account, a life insurance policy from a deceased relative, or a variety of other means.
