CMT Awards Recap

By Syndicated Content Oct 22, 2020 | 6:47 AM

Carrie Underwood won big at last night’s “CMT Music Awards”. “Drinking Alone” picked up two trophies, for Video of the Year and Female Video of the Year. That brings her total to 22 awards, which remains the most in CMT history.

She won the same two awards last year, but with different songs. “Love Wins” was Female Video of the Year, and “Cry Pretty” won Video of the Year.

Other winners included Gabby Barrett whose “I Hope” won Breakthrough Video of the Year. And in the category we hope to never see again, Granger Smith won Quarantine Video of the Year for “Don’t Cough On Me”.

As for the show, they did their best considering all the safety protocols and social distancing. It was odd to see winners on location somewhere else as their name was announced, and then doing “impromptu” acceptance speeches.

The three co-hosts Kane Brown, Sarah Hyland, and Ashley McBryde managed to keep things moving. If there’s a breakout from that bunch, I’m going with Ashley who quickly settled into the job. This won’t be her last hosting gig.

The big moment of Jennifer Nettles getting the inaugural CMT Equal Play award was well done. It featured a video montage of female stars saluting her and the cause, and it referenced her infamous “Play our [effing] records” cape from the 2019 CMAs.

There was plenty of good music to go around. Luke Combs and Brooks & Dunn kicked it off with “1, 2 Many”. It rocked, and it got even better when Luke stayed on brand by shot-gunning a beer.

Shania Twain’s “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under” video was filmed in Switzerland. Now that’s distance. Speaking of, Kelsea Ballerini and Halsey taped their smoking hot performance of “The Other Girl” at some bar in L.A.

We should talk about Jimmie Allen and Noah Cyrus’s performance of “This Is Us”. At first glance she looked nearly naked. Turns out it was a sheer bodysuit with strategically placed silver adornments. The Internet was conflicted.

Morgan Wallen sang “Chasin’ You” at Tennessee’s Ruskin Cave. It was taped a few weeks ago, before his SNL cancellation.

Ruskin Cave is also where Little Big Town closed the night with a solid performance of “Wine, Beer, Whiskey”.
