October 21, 2020 – Ed Culp, former Decatur Park District Police Chief, officially announced that he will run for one of 3 seats on the city council in the Spring.
Culp currently serves as the training director at the Macon County Law Enforcement Training Center. From 2015 to 2018, Culp served as the Decatur Park District Police Chief after more than 20 years at the Macon County Sheriffs Office.
Culp said that service matters to him and he loves Decatur. “I personally love Decatur, Illinois. I love the people here. This town has got good people in it.” Culp added that he felt it was time to do more. “I’m only 52 years old. It’s not time for me to go away yet.”
Culp said he reached out to people he trusts before announcing his run. “The first thing they say to me is “are you crazy? Then they say “you’d be a great city councilman. I have the work ethic and professionalism to take us forward.”
In announcing his candidacy, Culp said he would like to see more transparency within the City Council as well as more concentration on building up the community assets, such as lake Decatur.
The 3 seats on the Council held by David Horn, Chuck Kuhle and Pat McDaniel are up this coming spring. Horn and Kuhle have indicated they plan to run for re-election and Pat McDaniel has said he will not.
