December 16, 2020 – With the New Year around the corner, now is as good a time as any to get a head start on your 2021 fitness goals.

Call it the COVID-15, the “pandemic paunch”, “adding curves to flatten the curve”. .  the pandemic has added to the challenge of maintaining personal fitness. But a local fitness instructor just celebrated her 200th virtual fitness class of the year.

Tracy Hewitt, Fitness Supervisor at the Decatur Indoor Sports Center, has been a fitness instructor for more than 20 years. Tracy became a fitness instructor after majoring in elementary education and teaching a water aerobics class at the YMCA. She went on to be a fourth-grade teacher but, after having children, she worked for a local gym and has been an instructor ever since.

Tracy credits her tight-knit workout family for the success of her classes during the pandemic, “The members here are incredible and I truly love what I get to do here every day…you have to have that internal motivation but I’ve seen that it’s really the people you get to work out that with that make a huge impact on your life.” said Hewitt.

Hewitt bases her workouts on what members and clients tell her. She’s been called a drill sergeant with a smile and her goal is to not let people slack on their workouts while also enjoying themselves in the process. She brings that energy to her online fitness classes, which she calls her “10 a.m. tribe”.

“A lot of people find working out online very difficult. Not a lot of people want to stare at a computer screen, but the format that Facebook allows us to use makes it easy to talk back and forth with my class and it has helped us get through this period that no one has ever experienced before,” she said. “It’s all about having fun, learning how to be successful and confident in your body, and getting stronger and healthier.”

Tracy’s class is available online Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. for DISC members. Anyone who is a DISC member can request access to her class. Those interested in joining can do so by contacting the Decatur Indoor Sports Center at (217) 429-3472.
