December 20, 2020 – A friendly competition between local first responders to raise funds for the Salvation Army has a 2020 winner.
“Gurneys, Guns and Hoses”, held Dec. 10-12th, raised $14,099.37 with the Decatur City Fire Department being declared the winner. All dollars raised during this event weekend were able to be matched up to $25,000 and a local foundation donated the remaining amount so that the Salvation Army was able to receive the full matching gift.
The 2020 event started “Curbside” on Dec 10 to kick off the weekend sharing 5 “curbside” kettles to accept donations. Three of the five groups were able to ring bells during the day on Dec 11 & 12. All five of the groups had an online “Virtual Kettle” set up this year to accept online donations. They are still open for December donations.
Decatur City Fire Department raised $7,551.03 breaking their own 2016 record for dollars raised. Coming in second was the Macon County Sheriff Department, followed by the Decatur Police Department, Decatur Ambulance, and County Fire Department respectively.
“With this year being so different, we were still able to raise an unbelievable amount again this year. We thank the City & County Fire Departments, Decatur Ambulance, the Decatur Police Department, & the Macon County Sheriff Department for their willingness to ring bells for The Salvation Army each year and for all they do for our Community. This truly would not be this positive of a weekend without their willingness to ring bells” said the Salvation Army.
