December 22, 2020 – The Montessori Academy for Peace has a new marquee sign, and its installation marked a special moment for one Decatur Public Schools Employee.

Buddy Peck, the 4th longest employed staff member of DPS, has worked for DPS for 44 years as Decatur Public Schools Buildings & Grounds Maintenance staff member.  He helped lay the foundation for the new marquee sign that was installed Tuesday. What he didn’t know was that the designer of the sign, his daughter Kayla Peck, would be there to surprise him.

Kayla Peck works for BLDD Architects and thought this would be a great way to honor her dad.

“Throughout DPS we’ve been putting up identification signs with brand new logos on them with an LED message center so parents and kids can stay up-to-date on what’s happening in all the schools as they drive past,” said Kayla. “It will be a nice little reminder on what we’ve done here before Buddy retires.”

When asked what it means to Buddy to see his daughter’s part in the new signs, he said, “I’m proud of her, she’s the greatest.”

Buddy is set to retire from his job with the Buildings & Ground maintenance staff in 2 and half years, or thirty months and three days, to be exact.

There will be a total of 14 new marquee signs put up for DPS schools.
