January 13, 2021 – Lake Decatur’s low water levels have shown people that there is a need for cleanup below the dam. Local resident Steve Nichols has started a Facebook group to bring volunteers together in an effort to stop litter from washing downriver.
The group plans to meet at the road below the dam but plans to clean up other areas like the William Street Bridge, Grove Road, Sportsman’s Park, and the fishing area near the dam.
“The amount of litter on the banks of our lake and river below the dam is disgusting and an embarrassment,” said Nichols. “Much of the trash left behind, like fishing line, are extremely dangerous to wildlife. Our lake water level is very low right now which gives the best opportunity to pick up the most trash. Just need snow and rain free days. So, it’s a little urgent right now because we never know when a big rain will come and fill the lake back up.”
Want to volunteer? Go to their Facebook page and RSVP. They are also looking for supplies such as gloves, safety vests, and garbage bags.
They plan to meet on West Lincoln Park Drive near the Lake Decatur Dam on Saturday, January 23 at 11 am, but the event may be pushed back due to inclement weather. Make sure to check their Facebook page for any changes.
