February 18, 2021 – With natural gas prices spiking, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency is offering a list of tips to help make sure your home is winterized and saving energy. There are some steps you can take to help extend your fuel supply and protect your house from the bitter cold says IEMA spokesperson Rebecca Clark.
“Insulate walls and attics, caulk and weatherize doors and windows, hang blankets over windows at night, but make sure you let that sunshine in during the day so that you can try and warm up that home. Cover any cracks around doors with rugs or newspapers or towels or something to serve as a barrier to keep that cold air out,” said Clark.
To conserve energy, Clark suggests turning your thermostat and water heater down a couple of degrees, set your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise which will push warm air down and avoid using large appliances like dishwashers, washers, and dryers as much as possible.
