April 26, 2021 – The Decatur Family YMCA has relaunched their Pedaling for Parkinson’s program, a physical activity and well-being initiative that helps people affected by Parkinson’s. Registration is now open for the class beginning May 3rd.
“We’re thrilled to relaunch our Pedaling for Parkinson’s program that will support community members who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s,” says Decatur Family YMCA CEO, Dominic Santomassimo. “86% of health care spending is for patients with one or more chronic conditions. At the Y, we’re dedicated to keeping people healthy and reducing their risk of developing a chronic disease by providing access to evidenced-based, outcome-driving programs that fill gaps and supports traditional healthcare.”
Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that slowly and progressively robs patients of control over their bodies. Nothing stops Parkinson’s from worsening, but research showed a 35% reduction in symptoms by the simple act of pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace (between 80-90 revolutions per minute).
The Decatur Family YMCA has coaches specifically trained and certified by a National Parkinson’s trainer to work with Pedaling enrollees. Thanks to generous Annual Campaign Donors, this class is free for YMCA members and for the first eight weeks for non-members. To participate, a medical clearance and referral from a medical provider are required.
Participants must be over the age of 30 and diagnosed with Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. The program will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. beginning May 3, 2021.
