
May 3, 2021 – Former Sheriff Howard G. Buffett plans to run for Macon County Sheriff in 2022.
Buffett filed a Statement of Organization with the Illinois State Board of Elections establishing “The Committee to Elect Buffett for Sheriff”. Buffett issued a statement saying that a formal announcement will come at a later date.
Howard G. Buffett was appointed as Macon County Sheriff from September of 2017 until November of 2018, serving the remaining term of retiring sheriff Tom Schneider. Prior to serving as Sheriff, he served as Undersheriff of Macon County for three years.
Buffett has over eight years of experience in law enforcement in addition to an extensive background in business, elected public office, government service, and experience working in conflict and post-conflict countries throughout the world as the CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.
He was certified by the Central Illinois Regional Commission for Law Enforcement as an Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff in August 2012 and by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as a Part-Time Law Enforcement Officer in January 2019.
In 2015, he was presented the National Sheriffs’ Association Medal of Merit for his support to the field of law enforcement & criminal justice, in 2016, named an honorary member of the National Sheriffs’ Association, and in 2017, received the High Sheriff Award, the highest award presented by the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. In 2017, Undersheriff Buffett also received the Medal of Honor from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois for his role in saving a deputy’s life.
Buffett has held senior corporate positions and has served on a number of public and private corporate boards, gaining experience in operations, risk management, regulatory issues, and geopolitical complexities. He currently serves on the Corporate Board of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. He previously served on the publicly-traded boards of Archer Daniels Midland, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc., The Coca-Cola Company, ConAgra Foods, and The Lindsay Corporation. Buffett is also Chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, a private family foundation he founded in 1999 to address the needs of the most vulnerable populations around the world, including the United States.
Buffett has directed more than $2 billion of philanthropic investment in support of food security, conflict mitigation, and public safety and is also the author of two New York Times-bestselling books, 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World and Our 50-State Border Crisis: How the Mexican Border Fuels the Drug Epidemic Across America.
