May 27, 2021 – When Eisenhower and MacArthur High Schools faced off in both girls softball and boys baseball Thursday evening, a special guest was on hand to throw out the first pitch.

Philanthropist Howard Buffett of The Howard G. Buffett Foundation took to the mound between games to throw out a ceremonial pitch on the new baseball field and park adjacent to the new Johns Hill Magnet School complex.

Buffett has been a tremendous supporter of the project to revitalize the Johns Hill neighborhood, including building the new sports complex on the Johns Hill Magnet School property. Buffett has also funded recent major programs in District #61 such as the Dwayne O. Andreas Ag Academy and Jerry J. Dawson Civic Leadership Institute.

The sports complex is just a small portion of Buffett’s efforts to revitalize the area.

After meeting with the city and members of the neighborhood, Buffett committed $9.2 million to several large-scale revitalization projects in the area,  including beatification, gutter and sidewalk improvements, alley paving, additional lighting, and cameras.
