June 24, 2021 – The Salvation Army is hosting a Peace Summit on June 28, 2021 from 9 am to 1 pm. The event will take place at 229 W. Main in their Community Center. Lunch will be provided.
The 2 Keynote presenters will be Keyria Rodgers & Dwayne Bryant. Keyria Rodgers is currently the Director of Millikin’s Criminal Justice Department. Dwayne Bryant is an international speaker, consultant, author, and CEO of Inner Vision International. Dwayne has been a 3-time guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show, hosted the Unity Breakfast for the Obama Presidential Library, & has been featured on a number of TV networks for his impactful work in various communities.
The purpose of this event is to present characteristics of peace and unity within a community and have dialogue discussing peace, unity, justice around topics that can increase knowledge, empathy, approach, and even healing in our community so we can be successful together. Most importantly, the coordinators of this event are seeking audience participation to create focus groups that identify critical needs within our community.
Thanks to a 2020-2021 Envisioning Justice Grant Award from Illinois Humanities, Keyria and the Global Restorative Justice Partnership (GRJP) are partnering with the Salvation Army to develop an initial concept of “peace hub” in Decatur. This peace hub will focus on critical issues identified by the Decatur community such as peacemaking practices, addressing family and community violence, youth programming, expungements, victim support services, restoration and healing, and more.
The GRJP recently had a virtual conference that involved discussion from leaders and individuals all over the world. You can also find more information about the GRJP at www.GRJP.org.
