June 29, 2021 – Duck season is officially open at Children’s Museum of Illinois, which means someone will soon win $3,000 via the 2021 Duck Derby, presented by Jerger Pediatric Dentistry. This will be the 30th year for the Duck Derby.

Up to 5,000 rubber ducks will race on Saturday, August 7th at the museum. Racing in heats down a custom-built, water-propelled racetrack, the final race will see $3,000 awarded to the first place duck, followed by $1,500 and $500 going to the ducks finishing second and third.

Ducks can be adopted at CMofIL.org or by calling 217-423-5437. The more you adopt, the greater your chance of winning. Proceeds directly benefit the non-profit Children’s Museum of Illinois.

Additionally, three $200 “Lucky Ducks” sponsored by Corley Family Dental will be drawn on WSOY leading up to the event. These are drawn from all currently purchased ducks and will not disqualify someone from winning the grand prize.

According to President & CEO Abby Koester, anticipation is high for this year’s return to a live event. An online-only version was necessitated in 2020 due to the pandemic.

“We did well last year under the circumstances, and certainly did our best to keep things fun, but nothing beats the excitement of being there to watch the races live,” says Koester. She adds that the carnival-like atmosphere of past years will return, with family activities for the day currently being planned.

Children’s Museum of Illinois is currently open Thursdays through Saturdays from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and Sundays from noon to 4:30 pm. “Bonus Play” days begin July 1st when Thursday hours will extend to 7:30 pm.

Additional Bonus Play days may be introduced at the museum’s discretion.
