Woodstock ’99 was meant to celebrate the original 1969 festival. It, however, turned in to a weekend of rage, fire, and riots.
MUSIC BOX: WOODSTOCK 99: PEACE, LOVE, AND RAGE will look at the weekend that started out as a good idea but collapsed under the weight of its own misguidedness.
The festival promoters cut costs wherever they could and that resulted in understaffed security, which allowed the mob to explode into a riot of destruction to close out the festival. The agitated crowd hit their breaking point by the end of the weekend due to factors like the summer heat, lack of proper sanitation, and access to free drinking water.
MUSIC BOX: WOODSTOCK 99: PEACE, LOVE, AND RAGE will air on HBO at 8:00 CT and stream on HBO Max. This will serve as the first in a series of MUSIC BOX documentaries. The next in the series will include:
