LISTEN: Molly Duesterhaus, Millikin’s Head Triathlon Coach/Director of Swimming, talked about the NCAA Triathlon Championship and upcoming swim season.
After the Covid-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 season, Millikin’s triathlon team, picked up where it left off.
Having placed third in the NCAA Triathlon National Championship, in the first two years of the program, the Big Blue improved. The team finished the 2021 season in second place.
For those unfamiliar with triathlons, the race consists of a 750m swim, followed by a 20k bike ride, and then ending with a 5k run. The triathlon is an emerging sport, and is just two institutions shy of reaching the 40 threshold needed, to become an full-fledged NCAA Championship sport.
The team won their first NCAA Qualifier in program history. The program started in 2018. Seniors, Hope Roderick, Brigid Duesterhaus, and Jaden Lockard, are some of team’s founding members.
With the 2021 season in the books, Coach Duesterhaus and her team, will look ahead to the swimming season. All members of the triathlon will compete in the swimming season.
