December 21, 2021 – There have been reports of a loud boom heard across the Central Illinois area. Residents from Mattoon, Taylorville, Effingham, Springfield, Decatur, and more have reported hearing the sound.

Update from the Sangamon County Illinois Office of Emergency Management Facebook:

“Illinois Emergency Management Agency received confirmation from Kansas City FAA that the boom was caused by F15 EX Strike Eagle fighter jets traveling at super sonic speeds.

We are aware of the “boom” heard across multiple counties and are working with local officials to determine the cause. So far no damage has been reported. The likely causes are something atmospheric (meteorite) or sonic boom from jets.”

Authorities are aware of the situation and are asking residents to avoid calling emergency services for questions of what happened, as it can tie up emergency phone calls.

This story will be updated as more information is made available.
