January 6, 2022 – Winter weather can turn dangerous for travelers quickly. Winter storms and cold weather can lead to poor road conditions, which are responsible for nearly 500,000 crashes every winter.

Having a plan to be safe during travel and also being prepared for the worst are both important. Local auto care shops Ripples Auto Body and South Shores Auto Service gave their suggestions for safe travel and preparedness tips.

Ripples Auto Body suggests keeping extra washer fluid in your trunk and also an emergency kit that contains items such as blankets, candles, matches, water, and food, such as a box of granola bars. They also recommend a backup charger and battery pack for phones in case a person ends up stuck and needs to reach somebody for help.

South Shores Auto Service recommended making sure your battery, starter, and alternator are all fully charged before hitting the road and checking all fluid levels, tire pressure, and tread level on all four tires. They recommend taking extra precautions for warmth by having a blanket, gloves, and an emergency kit.

Both Ripples and South Shores Auto Service recommended keeping at least a quarter to half tank of gas in your car so that the car can continue running to heat the car if you get stuck. Another suggestion in case you become stuck was to bring kitty litter to help melt the snow around your tires.

If you do happen to find yourself stuck, it is recommended to stay in your car, but make sure your exhaust pipes are clear of obstructions to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.
