March 19, 2022 – VFW Post 99 hosted a community outreach today to provide the community information that could help prevent further suicides within our veteran communities.
The Danville Veterans Administration, The Macon County Veterans Assistance Commission, The Department of Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars Service Office, Post 99 VFW Auxiliary, and The Water Street Mission presented, including Amber Clark, social worker of the Decatur Department of Veteran Affairs.
“Suicide isn’t caused by one single thing,” Clark said. “Sometimes we think, ‘If we can fix just fix this one thing, then that will keep it from happening.’ but it’s much more complex than that.” she said.
The Veteran Administration statistics confirm that 17 veterans a day succumb to suicide—6,205 each year, and Post 99 is doing its part to make a difference.
The VFW Post 99 presented various information regarding veteran benefits, gun safety, and more.
Kevin Lockhart, VFW member and organizer, explained, “We all know a veteran, whether family or friend, and I believe this educational information will be valuable in understanding how to respond and prevent suicides moving forward.”
