April 13, 2022 – The Macon-Piatt Regional Office of Education is hosting two nationally known speakers in April and May to address cyber safety and adolescent drug use.

Detective Richard Wistocki, who has been featured on major media networks as well as in print media, will speak to over 1,000 middle and high school students in Macon and Piatt Counties over a two-day period. On April 20, he will speak to parents and community members at Warrensburg-Latham High School Cafetorium from 6:30-8:00 p.m. His message will focus on cyber safety, specifically addressing how to monitor and control cell phones and home computer social media accounts.

This event is open to all Macon and Piatt County parents and community members.

Michael Deleon is the founder of Steered Straight and Stay in Your Lane Media, producing four award-winning documentaries about the dangers of adolescent drug use. He will speak to over 3,000 Macon and Piatt County middle and high school students over a three-day period in May.

On May 5, he will conduct a parent academy, open to all community members, at the Decatur Salvation Army Community Room from 6:30-8:00 p.m. His message will focus on the systemic dangers of vaping, JUUL, and drug use on the developing brain.

“The Macon-Piatt Regional Office of Education #39 received a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) grant as well as a Community Partnership Grant, which gives us an opportunity to work together with community agencies in a broader capacity to bring drug, safety, and mental health education and support to the students and families in Macon and Piatt Counties,” said Jill Reedy, Macon-Piatt Regional Office of Education assistant superintendent of schools.

A special thanks to Connie Gyorr, founder of Marisa’s Purpose, as well as, Cheryl Warner, Superintendent of Warrensburg-Latham CUSD #11 and Lts. Kenesa and Shanell Debela of the Decatur Salvation Army for hosting the community events.
