May 6, 2022- DPS 61 (Decatur Public Schools District 61) students were recognized for completion of co-op programs and pre-apprenticeship programs. These programs are part of the Career Pathways program. The program introduces students to occupations, and then following graduation, they can transition to positions at those occupations.
The event was held at the Keil Administration building. Employers, administrators, and families, were in attendance as students signed their certificates of completion of the Pathways program.
Students across the country are celebrated for their commitment to compete in athletics at the next level, or for receiving full ride academic scholarships. Just as those young people deserve to be recognized for taking the next step, so do the students who choose another path. The students who choose to enter the work force. The DPS Career Signing Day gives them that opportunity.
Some of the employers featured in the program included Caterpillar, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Illini Works.
Superintendent, Dr. Rochelle Clark, believes this program allows high school seniors an opportunity to set an example and serve as role models for the younger students in the community.
“Whenever you look back, talk to the little ones, talk to your siblings, and say if I can do it, you can do it,” Clark said. “Show them by your example that you are just a few more steps ahead of them, and you are willing to reach back and bring them along the way.”
The students have support while in the program, but Ashley Grayned, Executive Director of Innovative Programs and Strategic Planning, made it clear that support will continue long after graduation.
“We are all here to wrap you all with support,” Grayned said. “We have all tried to touch you all in different ways on this journey, and the support and love won’t stop when you graduate next week.”
