May 19, 2022 – Decatur Public schools may be considering a move to do away with uniforms at its high schools.
During the month of May 2022, Decatur Public Schools instituted a pilot program to eliminate the high schools’ required uniforms. The move was recommended by the DPS superintendent advisory council. DPS is now seeking feedback from it’s students, staff, and parents/guardians to determine if the uniform-free month was a success.
The school uniform policy was put in place in 2011 under the leadership of former DPS Superintendent Gloria Davis. The policy directed students to adhere to solid clothing in school colors, no clothing with logos, shirts with collars, and specific requirements for pants, the length of shorts, and the use of belts.
The survey is only available to current DPS61 high school students, staff, and guardians. Access to the survey can be found HERE.
