June 18, 2022- Community members and their families came out to Central Park to celebrate the African-American Cultural and Genealogical Society’s 28th annual Juneteenth National Freedom Day.

The event started with a freedom march that began on the west side of the Macon County Courthouse. Participants made their way to Central Park to take part in a celebration, that included speakers, live music, and interpretive dance.

There were several booths and food trucks (The Turkey Man, The Snowball Effect, TKG’s Daily Delights, and Bobbie Lane’s BBQ) lining the perimeter of the park.

Terrence Taylor, who emceed the event was more than satisfied with the turnout, and believes that Juneteenth is a day that deserves to not only be recognized and celebrated in June, but throughout the whole year.

“Black history is America’s history and should be celebrated every day, not just on Juneteenth,” Taylor said. “Now is a perfect time to learn about our history, America’s history and Black history. Why not celebrate it, showcase it, highlight it, the good times, the bad times, the triumphant times. This is a day of celebration for sure.”
