Millikin Community Arts Academy Rock U to Begin September 16

Sep 9, 2022 | 11:01 AM

September 9, 2022 – Millikin Community Arts Academy (MCAA) and Kirkland Fine Arts Center announced the kick-off concert for Rock University (Rock U), to be held Friday, September 16, at 7:30 p.m. and featuring local bands Harlem Hayfield, Said Echo and TaQsem.

Rock U is a local educational program for middle and high school students who play the guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and/or sing and want to perform in local venues. New students join the program with experience on their instrument, but through the course of the semester improve their skills and learn to play as a band.

The program includes the opportunity to create a recording in the Millitrax studio. Held each semester, the fall schedule runs September 17 through December 3 (no session October 15 or November 16), with practice sessions held Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost for the semester is $200 and includes instruction and supervision.

Each band participating in the kick-off concert includes instructors in the program. Harlem Hayfield is a six-piece rustbelt soul band from Decatur, Illinois. Blending Motown with alternative rock to create a unique, heartfelt sound, their first EP “Strong” was released in 2020. Said Echo, also based in Decatur, is an alternative rock band with a driving drumbeat and ’90s alternative vibes. TaQsem, Decatur-based as well, is an artist, percussionist and producer whose contemporary beats and autotuned vocals are reminiscent of the best of Will.i.am.

Come out to support these local artists and cheer for the up-and-coming talent of Rock U’s students and graduates. The night is guaranteed to start your weekend with a rocking good time.

Rock U Live on Stage, Friday, September 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Albert Taylor Theatre in Shilling Hall at Millikin University, is a production of the Millikin Community Arts Academy (MCAA) and Kirkland Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $15 and all proceeds benefit the MCAA.

Additional programming offered by the MCAA can be found on their website.

Support for Kirkland Fine Arts Center has been provided by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. To buy tickets and for a full schedule of events, please visit kirklandfinearts.com.
