DPS Board of Education to Vote on Intergovernmental Agreement to Buy Back Woodrow Wilson School

Dec 9, 2022 | 6:14 PM

December 9, 2022 – The Decatur Public Schools Board of Education will vote Tuesday, December 13, on an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Decatur which will result in DPS owning the soon-to-be vacant property of Woodrow Wilson School.

Originally built in the 1930s, Woodrow Wilson was closed as a school facility in 1979. The City of Decatur purchased the property at 1140 West Sunset Avenue in October 2022 from an out-of-state owner. The City and District #61 both recognize that the former school is dangerous and unsafe, and that demolition is in the best interest of the neighborhood and will contribute to the revitalization of the community. At this time there are no plans for the future of the vacant site.

The City will be responsible for the demolition and DPS will purchase the vacant land for 50 percent of the cost of demolition. The intergovernmental agreement will be voted on by the Board of Education during its regular meeting on Tuesday, December 13.
