January 11, 2023 – On Friday, January 13, Sherrod’s Independent Mentoring Program, Inc. and the Decatur Police Department will be hosting a free Gaming Day for 200 students at Stephen Decatur Middle School from 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
In the fall of 2022, Principal Conn, Heather England, Jared Lamb, Professor Hawkins, and Dr. Sherrod met to brainstorm ways to help improve attendance for students and provide free services from their violence prevention program.
Dr. Sherrod suggested that they use their R3 Gaming Day package as an incentive to help empower students to maintain good grades, good behavior, good attendance, acts of kindness, and volunteering.
To celebrate student success for the 200 students selected to participate in this program, there will be ten 50- to 65-inch screens with ten Playstation 5 games. Thanks to a partnership with Pizza Hut on Williams Street, there will also be a pizza party, board games, and sweet treats.
This event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sponsors include Macon County law Enforcement, S.I.M.P. Inc., the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority R3 grant, Governor Pritzker, and Lt. Governor Stratton.
