February 23, 2023- Due to the success of the peace summits the past two years, Decatur will once again bring the community together to have a discussion on restorative justice and work on an action plan to create a better community.
Restorative practices is a social science that studies how relationships can be strengthened between individuals as well as in a community.
The 2023 Peace Summit Cafe will be held at the Salvation Army on Saturday, February 25th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will be hosted by Professor Keyria Rodgers and Millikin University’s Criminal Justice Department and local nonprofit Walk It Like We Talk It. Other sponsors include the Community Foundation of Macon County and Fully Free, an organization that works to reform the criminal legal system.
The Peace Summit will include a keynote speech from Marlon Chamberlain, Vice Chairman of RROCI-Restoring
Rights & Opportunities Coalition of which focuses on bringing many resources to local communities in Illinois, including eliminating barriers for individuals with lived experiences within the criminal justice system.
The event is free and open to the public, and lunch will be provided. Community members and organizations are invited to come participate in the discussion, as well as set up a table to promote their organizations’ resources.
Organizations interested in a table can contact Dominique Bates-Smith, Co-Founder/CEO of Walk It Like We Talk It at dom.batessmith.wilwti@gmail.com
