Oglesby Mansion to host open house

Mar 23, 2023 | 2:00 PM

March 23, 2023 – The Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion will be hosting its first open house of 2023 on Sunday, March 26th

The doors will open at 2 pm and the Mansion will close at 4 pm. The Mansion is located at 421 West William Street.  A $2 per person donation is requested.  Members of the Board of Directors and community volunteers act as docents during the tours. The home is open the last Sunday of each month (2 pm-4 pm) through November.

Oglesby is recognized as one of Decatur’s most distinguished citizens.  He served the Country as a U.S. Senator, Union General during the Civil War, a three-term Governor of Illinois and was a close friend and colleague of Abraham Lincoln.

The 1876 house was built in the Italianate style with a low-pitched roof and a widow’s walk.  Famed skyscraper architect William Jenney was commissioned by Oglesby to design the William Street home in Decatur.  In 1972, the Macon County Conservation District purchased the home and began restoration in 1976.  The contents of the Mansion are maintained by a local not-for-profit, Gov. Oglesby Mansion, Inc.
