May 9, 2023- Students and educators from Maroa-Forsyth Grade School & South Shores Elementary School participated in day two of Agucation at Richland Community College, hosted by the Macon County Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom Committee.
Agucation is an annual event that was created in an effort to provide students in Macon County a more vivid perception of the power of modern agriculture.
Over 500 fifth-grade Macon County students signed up to participate in this year’s three day event.
On Tuesday, students had the opportunity to tour five stations on Richland’s campus. Stations included farm animals, viewing of machinery for farming, and three presentations from ADM, University of Illinois Extension, and Sangamon Valley High School’s FFA chapter.
The focus is to show the students the importance of agriculture both here in Central Illinois and worldwide, as well as to give them an understanding of where their food, fiber and fuel come from.
Jamie McCool, a fifth-grade teacher at Maroa-Forsyth Grade School, believes Agucation is important because it gives students a chance to learn how agriculture is vital to the growth of our community.
“This gives the kids a chance to see up close and personal what they see all the time,” McCool said. “They just learn about how in depth corn and soy beans are, and how vital they are to the community.
