May 22, 2023 – Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois, Decatur Memorial Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital hosted their 36th annual National Cancer Survivors Day Sunday.

The event, which takes place nationally, is an annual celebration that honors cancer survivors, whether recently diagnosed or in remission for years. Locally, the three organizations held a celebration in the pavilion in Nelson Park.

“We are super excited to be a co-sponsor of this event. With [our organizations] coming together, we realized we could do more than if we had done the celebration individually,” said Tricia Henning, Director of Special Projects with Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois.

Andrew Dilbeck, Marketing Specialist with HSHS St Mary’s Hospital said the event is a great opportunity for the cancer survivor community to come together and celebrate each other and celebrate life. “It’s really special when we are able to partner with the other organizations showing one community of care for our local cancer patients and survivors.”

“This day also celebrates the families of cancer survivors and our healthcare workers, said Rachael Ward, Oncology outreach coordinator with Decatur Memorial Hospital. “They go on that journey with them and they deserve to be recognized and celebrated as well.”

Volunteers from all three organizations served a free BBQ meal from Notorious P.I.G. and participants also enjoyed live music from Pizzazz.
