June 19, 2023 – The Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT) is in Decatur this week, using innovative technology and interactive lessons to teach messages of tolerance to communities across Illinois.
The mobile exhibit is sponsored by The Community Foundation of Macon County, in partnership with Decatur Memorial Hospital. The MMOT opened today at the African American Cultural & Genealogical Society of Illinois, as part of their Juneteenth celebration, before it moves to Decatur Memorial Hospital Tuesday through Friday, June 23.
As the first of its kind in the country, its goal is to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to promote human dignity and raise their voices against antisemitism, bullying, racism, hate, and intolerance.
Elizabeth Blair, Education Associate for the MMOT said the mobile museum is a great learning tool for younger generations. “For students, we really get them to think about their role in the world- how they can take action, so we get a lot of really great ideas from them about what they can do,” Blair said. “People bring their families and see the videos and it seems to have a very positive effect on them.”
The mobile museum will be available at the following dates, times, and locations for the remainder of the week.
- Tuesday, June 20 — 1 p.m.-7 p.m., Decatur Memorial Hospital
- Wednesday, June 21 — 12 p.m.-6 p.m., Decatur Memorial Hospital
