4-H Passport program to host outdoor events for local youth

June 19, 2023 – Various fishing, gardening and hiking activities held as part of a new DeWitt, Macon and Piatt 4-H program, called “Passport to the Outdoors,” will encourage area youth to get outside this summer.

“Passport to the Outdoors” will feature eight free outdoor events open to ages 8-18. Participants will receive a stamp booklet—their Passport—at the first event they attend and will receive a stamp for each additional event. For every two events attended, each participant will receive a prize. Registration is required.

“Get a 4-H passport, have it stamped, earn prizes, but most of all, have fun,” said Eric Eickmeier, 4-H’s program coordinator, in a press release. “We want kids to get outdoors and enjoy nature.”

Passport events will be held across the three counties until the beginning of August. A full list of events is as follows.

  • June 28, 7-10 a.m.: fishing, Bement Forest Preserve Park
  • July 12, 9-10 a.m.: gardening, Crossing Healthcare Garden
  • July 12, 4-7 p.m.: fishing, Clifton Lake
  • July 19, 7-10 a.m.: fishing, Weldon Springs State Park
  • July 26, 9-11 a.m., hiking, Lodge Park
  • August 2, 9-11 a.m.: hiking, Sand Creek Conservation Area
  • August 9, 9-10 a.m.: gardening, Crossing Healthcare Garden
  • August 9, 1-3 p.m.: hiking, Weldon Springs State Park

A fishing license is required for participants aged 16 and up attending fishing events, except for the Clinton Lake session. Closed-toe shoes are required for all events, and 4-H recommends bringing water, sunscreen and insect repellent.
