June 27, 2023 – Decatur Public Transit is currently seeking input on expanding bus hours due to residents who night workers not having adequate transportation.
Currently, Decatur Public Transit only runs during the week until 7:15 p.m. and on Sundays until 6 p.m. The City of Decatur said that shift workers have requested the buses to run longer because they may be leaving work after bus hours.
Decatur Public Transit and the city are now seeking public input through an online survey to determine the best times for expanded hours in order to test the schedule with a pilot run. Funding for an expanded schedule would come from the Decatur Public Transit operational budget, which comes from state and federal grants.
“Decatur Public Transit strives to meet the needs of our citizens and adding extended evening hours will mean a more robust and inclusive service,” said Lacie Elzy, the city’s Director of Transportation Services. “We look forward to the survey results and possibly launching extending hours later this summer.”
Since posting the survey 175 responses have been received. The city encourages residents to submit responses to the survey by July 17.
