July 11, 2023 – A recent report from the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) listed the Decatur Police Department as one of the top police agencies in the State for DUI arrests.
Excluding Chicago, the most DUI arrests in Illinois for 2022 were in Aurora. The 2022 report released last week shows nearly 340 DUI arrests in Aurora. Decatur came in second with 289 arrests.
AAIM has conducted the survey, which is funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation, for 33 years. The annual survey determines how many DUI arrests departments make and to give recognition to the most productive departments and police officers. Nearly 700 police agencies were surveyed with 82% responding.
The Decatur Police Department has been the top department in the state in DUI arrests among municipal departments for the last 2 years (2020 and 2021) and is consistently in the top 5.
“For the year, 2022, DPD wasn’t able to pull off the three-peat, however, we did come in second in the state, with 289 DUI arrests,” said the Decatur Police Department in a recent release on social media. “Our officers are committed to removing impaired drivers from the roadways. We know it makes our roadways safer and saves lives. Please be responsible and don’t drive while impaired. The potential consequences are too great.”
“The high number of DUI arrests reduced the likelihood of multiple crashes, the likelihood of injuries or deaths that leave families devastated,” said Rita Kreslin, AAIM Executive Director. “Focused efforts and cooperation of law enforcement agencies, traffic safety advocates, and communities have helped to prevent crashes and save thousands of lives.”
AAIM is an Illinois-only citizen activist group founded in 1982 by victims of drunk driving. A detailed listing of survey results and participating departments is available by clicking HERE.
