July 18, 2023 – July is plastics-free month, and the Sanitary District of Decatur is challenging residents to celebrate by minimizing their plastic usage.
SDD said improper disposal of plastic waste can cause critical damage to drainage systems and sewer pipes, leading to damage and hazardous backups that require costly fixes. Last year, the department spent nearly $60,000 removing and disposing of plastic waste from the sewer systems, so they’re encouraging locals to limit their use throughout the month.
You can participate in the challenge by refraining from using single-use items like plastic straws, grocery bags and using reusable alternatives like cloth bags or metal straws. If plastic is unavoidable, recycle or properly dispose of any waste to avoid harm to sewer systems and the community at large.
