217 Wiffle Ball Classic // Facebook
July 25, 2023 – The 217 Wiffle Ball Classic, an annual fundraiser dedicated to furthering research for Alzheimer’s disease and supporting local treatment programs, will return to a backyard off of Lost Bridge Road next week for its eighth year of operation.
The week-long backyard wiffle ball tournament runs from August 1-6 and is organized by Decatur residents, including a board of directors. Hundreds, if not thousands, of fans from throughout Central Illinois and beyond flock to the Lewallen Place residence to see teams compete for the championship title, but the event’s overarching mission is to benefit those with Alzheimer’s and their families.
Event registration is closed, but spectators are welcome to attend and cheer on competing teams and enjoy food from onsite vendors. The tournament is held in the backyard of 2910 S. Lewallen Pl., which branches off Lost Bridge Road. Unlike previous years, for the safety of tournament-goers, Lost Bridge Road will be closed during daytime hours on August 1-6 between South Baltimore Avenue and East Fitzgerald Road. The City of Decatur approved the closure, which will be monitored by volunteers at both gates to admit local traffic, at a council meeting last month.
