July 25, 2023 – DPS Superintendent Dr. Rochelle Clark and DPS61 Board President Bill Clevenger, joined Byers & Co to discuss the latest update on the plan for Dennis School students.
DPS61 is currently struggling with the Illinois State Board of Education which determined that Dennis students will not be allowed e-learning days the month between the start of the school year and when the remaining modular classrooms are delivered. Under the current rules, ISBE says that in order for Dennis Lab students to start later, the entire district would have to be delayed a month as well. Both Clark and Clevenger said this is not an acceptable option and are working with ISBE and the Governors office for a temporary solution.
UPDATE July 27, 2023 – The ISBE issued the following statement:
ISBE has been in ongoing communication with the district via phone and email since they reached out. We understand this is a very challenging situation for everyone involved. Preserving students’ access to high-quality in-person instruction is paramount, especially as students are still recovering academically from the impact of remote learning during the pandemic. We will continue to work with the district on understanding all options and what’s in the best interest of students.
