July 26, 2023 – The Decatur Family YMCA will host its annual Backpack Attack school supply drive at three locations this year, supporting 2,100 local students entering kindergarten through sixth grade.

On Saturday, August 5 from 9 a.m.-noon, families can stop by the Y, Old King’s Orchard Community Center or Johns Hill Magnet School to pick up a bag stuffed with school supplies, facial tissue and disinfecting wipes, among other items. The bag’s goodies meet supply requirements from local schools, and organizers said they are looking for the event to be a one-stop-shop for families to prepare for a new school year.

“Every child deserves the chance to succeed, and Decatur Family YMCA is committed to making that happen,” Dominic Santomassimo, the Y’s CEO, said in a press release. “This year our backpacks are filled with even more school supplies, as well as classroom supplies like facial tissue and disinfecting wipes.”

Several local nonprofits, including Walk It Like We Talk It, the Centro for Hispanic & Immigrant Community Opportunities (CHICO), TAT Global Enterprises and Hands of Hearts will be onsite at the distribution locations to assist with delivering backpacks to families. Other local organizations, including the Empowerment Opportunity Center, Crossing Healthcare, Familia Dental and more, will be available at the Y to provide various back-to-school preparatory services.

The Y has also partnered with the Macon County Health Department to provide transportation to MCHD’s Condit Street facility for children who need required immunizations before starting the year. The shuttle will run from 9 a.m.-noon. To learn more about the clinic and other local opportunities for kids to get immunized, click HERE.

“The Y is all about strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility,” Santomassimo said. “This program encompasses all those aspects of the YMCA.”
