July 30, 2023 – The not-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Decatur increased 0.7 percentage point to 6.3 percent in June 2023 from 5.6 percent in June 2022.
Over-the-year, total nonfarm jobs increased in all fourteen metropolitan areas for the year ending June 2023, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). Over-the-year, the unemployment rate increased in thirteen metropolitan areas and decreased in one.
The metro areas with the largest unemployment rate increases were the Danville MSA (+1.0 point to 5.9%), the Kankakee MSA (+0.9 point to 5.7%), the Rockford MSA (+0.9 point to 6.3%) and the Lake County-Kenosha County IL-WI Metropolitan Division (+0.8 point to 4.6%). The only metro area with an unemployment rate decrease was the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights Metropolitan Division (-1.0 percentage point to 4.3%).
In Decatur, there were an estimated 2,836 unemployed people in the labor force in June 2023. The number of total nonfarm jobs in the Decatur metro area increased by +500 compared to a year ago. Employment increased in Construction and Mining (+300), Government (+200), Educational and Health Services (+200), Other Services (+100), and Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities (+100).
Payrolls were unchanged in Retail Trade, Professional and Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Financial Activities, Wholesale Trade, and Information. June payrolls declined in Manufacturing (-400).
