August 1, 2023 – The Decatur Area Arts Council will host pieces from the Bloomington-Normal Modern Quilt Guild in a limited time-only exhibit hosted at the Madden Arts Center.
From August 4-24, small art quilts and selected larger pieces, crafted in modern styles, will be on display for public viewing. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held as part of the August 4 First Friday Gallery Walk, from 5-7 p.m. Artists will speak about their work and light refreshments will be available. Although the Gallery Walk serves as the opening of the quilt exhibit, artists from the Anne Lloyd Gallery, Gallery 510 and Blue Connection will be on-hand to speak about their work.
The quilts planned to be on display are highly functional and employ modern design tactics, namely, bold colors and prints, high contrast, improvisational piecing and creative stitching. The Bloomington-Normal Modern Quilt Guild meets monthly to quilt and teach others about the craft, with the Decatur exhibit being their latest display.
Field trips to visit the Arts Council and the quilt exhibit are available to school and community groups of all ages. They include a guided tour through the gallery and an instructor-led art project and are held by appointment only during the week.
