The politically tinged “Hand Me Down World” was the Guess Who's first single after the surprising departure of guitarist and founding member Randy Bachman, who found it increasingly hard to reconcile his Mormon beliefs with a hedonistic rock 'n' roll lifestyle.
The Guess Who replaced Bachman with two musicians–Kurt Winter from the band Brother (which, like the Guess Who, recorded in Canada for producer Jack Richardson's Nimbus 9 label), and Greg Leskiw from the group Wild Rice.
Winter brought “Hand Me Down World” with him, along with the subsequent hits “Bus Rider” and “Do You Miss Me Darlin'?”
“Hand Me Down World” showed that the Guess Who could still have hits without Bachman, peaking at Number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Share The Land album, meanwhile, reached Number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned the Guess Who a gold album.
