August 7, 2023 – The Macon County Conservation District is inviting local stargazers to “take a journey through the night sky” this Saturday, August 12 at the 39th annual Astronomy Jamboree.
Held at Friends Creek Conservation Area, attendees can see constellations, other planets, our moon and the Perseid Meteor Shower at the free, out-of-this-world experience, held from 8-11 p.m. Local band The Red Wheelbarrows will play live from 8-8:45 p.m., and attendees will be able to view various outer space attractions through telescopes throughout the evening. Pre-registration is required by August 11.
“With the Conservation District’s telescope, you can make out the rings of Saturn and the Red Spot on Jupiter,” Alysia Callison, the Conservation District’s Director of Program Services, said in a press release. “It’s amazing to take these tiny, abstract spots of light in the sky and see them from a new perspective, and we can’t wait to show people some of the marvels of space for the 39th year in a row.”
Although a telescope will be available, attendees are encouraged to bring their own telescopes and knowledge to share with others. Weather permitting, organizers said Jupiter, Saturn, and the surface of Earth’s moon will be visible. In addition to the views of outer space, hot dogs and s’mores will be available in addition to crafts and a prize giveaway.
