August 7, 2023 – The Illinois State Police has launched the Civilian Crash Reporting System (CCRS), which will allow drivers to report collisions without having to wait for an officer to respond under certain conditions.

“For simple crashes where only one car is involved and no one is injured, the ability to file a report online instead of along the road will make it safer for drivers and our Troopers, and eliminate the need to wait for a Trooper to make the report,” said Brendan Kelly, the Illinois State Police’s Director.

Under limited criteria, individuals across the state can now safely make crash reports from their phone or computer, ensuring their safety and allowing officers to respond to higher-priority calls for service, according to an ISP press release. Only single-vehicle, property-damage-only crashes without any driver or passenger injuries can be reported via the online tool, and the collision must have happened on an interstate or US/Illinois route. Drivers involved in a multiple-vehicle crash or one with injuries cannot file a report online.

To file a report, visit the Illinois State Police website (isp.illinois.gov), click the “Crash Reports” button under the Quick Links heading and select “Complete a Crash Report Online.” The form asks where the crash occurred, driver information, vehicle passengers and information, damage and more. Completing the form could take “an hour or more,” according to the form’s website.

Once the report is successfully submitted, the individual will receive a unique receipt number and can print the completed crash report, which can be provided to an insurance company, if needed.  Individuals will still be required to pay $5.00 to obtain the final, approved crash report, which can be done online by clicking HERE.
