August 15, 2023 – A local section of Interstate 72, between Decatur and Champaign, will be dedicated as the “Officer Chris Oberheim Memorial Highway.”
Officer Chris Oberheim started his career at the Decatur Police Department in 2000. Chris transferred to the Champaign Police Department in 2008 where he continued to protect and serve his community. Chris received two medals of valor for his courageous acts of selfless bravery.
44 year old Oberheim was shot and killed while on duty on May 19th, 2021 while responding to a call for help.
Officer Oberheim left behind his wife and four daughters. On the day of his funeral, his wife (Amber) made a commitment to all police officers to defend their name, their purpose, their honor, and their badge. As a result, she and her four daughters created a foundation in her husband’s honor called Peacemaker Project 703.
A dedication of the “Officer Chris Oberheim Memorial Highway” will be held at 10am on August 26th, at Monticello High School.
