August 23, 2023 – The Decatur Family YMCA is launching a new program that will help combat the effects of memory loss—and it’s all through music.
Memory Keeper’s Chorus is a new non-audition choral group for those living with memory loss, their families, friends and volunteers aimed at minimizing the impact of dementia and other forms of memory loss. Recent scientific research shows that portions of the brain linked to music are undamaged by diseases like Alzheimer’s, and singing lowers cortisol levels and promotes senses of well-being, happiness and trust.
Participants will begin rehearsals on Friday, September 8 and practice once weekly for 16 weeks from 10-11:30 a.m., with a final concert in December. The Y has partnered with Caring Choirs of Central Illinois to create the ensemble, which is directed by Christina Shields, a life-long choral director and board-certified music therapist.
“Memory Keeper’s Chorus is only the 38th choir of its kind in the United States,” Shields said in a press release. “Our hope is that all community members of Decatur who would benefit from the chorus will find their way to us.”
Decatur’s choir was inspired by a similar project in Minneapolis, Minnesota, called Giving Voices. The program has been designed around industry-standard music therapy goals and intends to improve communication, socialization and the ability to self-express for those living with memory loss.
