August 23, 2023 – Macon County Environmental Management, in collaboration with Illinois EPA, will host a hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, October 28.

“Illinois EPA’s one-day Household Hazardous Waste collection events provide opportunities for residents to safely get rid of unused and unwanted chemicals and other hazardous products often found in homes,” Illinois EPA Director John Kim said in a press release. “We continue to see great attendance at collection locations throughout Illinois, showing the ongoing need for these important events. We thank our local partners for helping make each one of them possible.”

Open to all Illinois residents, the collection will be held in the John Deere Lot at Progress City on Decatur’s northeast side from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Pre-registration for a drop-off time is required, opening today and closing at noon on October 27. Wastes from businesses, institutions, non-profits and other organizations will not be accepted. Those who register for a timeslot may only bring one vehicle per registration.

Below is a list of accepted and prohibited items. This list is not exhaustive.

  • Allowed: acids/corrosives, oil-based paint (not latex-based), cleaning products, motor oil, fuel additives/cleaners, mercury thermometers, old medication, fluorescent bulbs, pool chemicals, antifreeze/coolant, aerosol paints
  • Not allowed: electronics, agricultural waste, farm machinery oil, non-lead/acid/car/lawn mower batteries, propane tanks, sharps/needles, tires, explosives, ammunition, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, potentially infectious medical waste

For safe transport, officials recommend placing items planned to be discarded in a disposable box to avoid spilling, separating unlike chemicals, securing lids of containers, stopping any leaks and placing waste in the trunk or bed of the vehicle.
