August 30, 2023- Community members in the Jasper Street Corridor gathered at Johns Hill Park for the Jasper Street Summer Fest yesterday, hosted by the City of Decatur.

Last October, the inaugural Jasper Street Summer Fest was held, in an effort to provide a voice to local residents. Residents gave their opinions on how the City could revitalize the neighborhoods in the Jasper Street Corridor.

“I think the revitalization project is important for the neighborhood and city because it will bring strength and togetherness to the neighborhood and city,” Elease Meeks, member of the Southside Improvement Association, said.

A year later, drafted plans to improve the Corridor were presented by Committee members at the Jasper Street Summer Fest to neighbors who then provided feedback.

“Ok, community, we heard what you said about economic development,” Cordaryl Patrick, Community Development Director at City of Decatur said. “This is an opportunity for us to use this space for what you told us for what you would like to see in this community.”

Drafted plans included transportation, outdoor recreation, economic opportunities, safety, housing, and beautification.

The free event also included food, music, bounce houses, and a bike rodeo.

Meeks is hopeful that people came away knowing the City of Decatur has the community’s best interest at heart.

“I hope that the people took away from the event that it is important to support a project that you are going to benefit from and the City of Decatur does care about our city,” Meeks said.
