August 31, 2023 – The Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and the Decatur Police Department are stepping up enforcement efforts on roadways across the state over Labor Day weekend, reminding motorists to drive sober and buckle up.
Throughout the final big weekend of the summer, roads will see an increased number of travelers, so drivers should take extra precautions when getting to and from their destination. That includes avoiding substances before you hit the roadway, buckling your seatbelt and putting down your cell phone before you take off. Troopers will be strictly enforcing the Fatal Four violations: driving under the influence, speeding, distracted driving and occupant restraint laws.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or other impairing substances is a serious crime because it creates an extremely dangerous situation for the driver and everyone on our roads,” said IDOT’s Director of Highways Project Implementation, Steve Travia. “It also comes with severe consequences for the offender.”
Remember the following safety tips if you’re hitting the road this weekend:
- If you’re planning to use drugs or alcohol, give your keys to a sober driver who can safely get you home, or call a taxi or rideshare service.
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, report it to law enforcement.
- Remind your friends never to get into a vehicle while under the influence or with someone who is impaired.
“Our first priority is to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to plan ahead for a sober ride home if they’ll be drinking or using another impairing substance,” said Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer. “Let’s make this a partnership between law enforcement and motorists—help us protect the community and put an end to the dangers of impaired driving.”
