September 11, 2023- The Decatur Police Department is warning residents about recent scam phone calls that tell respondents that they need to pay court fines.
According to the Decatur Police Department, the caller claims to be a Decatur Police officer who says they have missed court and need to pay a fine or post bail. The calls are coming from (217)952-4783. A call to that number gives you a voicemail message that says you have reached the confidential voicemail of the Decatur Police Department.
The Decatur Police Department wants residents to know that they do NOT call people to pay fines or post bail. “If you miss court and a warrant is issued for your arrest, we will come to you free of charge,” the department said.
This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Decatur Police Department at (217)-424-2711) or Crimestoppers (217-423-8477).
