September 15, 2023- The City of Decatur and Central Illinois Landbank Authority held a press conference and open house for the first completed home, 439 S. Maffit St in the Abandonment to Rehab Program.

The City of Decatur and the Central Illinois Landbank Authority partnered to create the Abandonment to Rehab Program, which restores vacant/abandoned homes. The project is funded by grants. A majority of the program is being funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.

The Abandonment to Rehab Program is just one of the many revitalization and rehabilitation projects planned for Decatur.

“Today is the beginning of potential meets reality, as it relates to improving our housing challenges in Decatur’s urban core,” Cordaryl Patrick, Community Development Director at City of Decatur said. “Our goal is to create safe, healthy, sustainable, affordable housing. And create a climate for individuals to move from rentership to home ownership.”

The Maffit home is one of ten properties in the first round of the Abandonment to Rehab Program. The home is approximately 1,535 square feet, with three bedrooms, one full bath, a full unfinished basement, and updated one-car detached garage.  The rehabilitation process included a complete interior remodel with new flooring, a dine-in kitchen with new cabinets and appliances, full bathroom remodel, new paint job, new windows, new siding and gutters, new gas-forced air furnace, central AC and water heater, and a new asphalt driveway.

The homes are expected to be move-in ready, as this property is, and the intent is to sell these homes to first-time home buyers.

This home was majorly supported through funding by the Illinois Housing Development Authority.
